Why should euthanasia and assisted suicide be illegal:

First of all, using euthanasia is a homicide because it takes a life even if the person is willing or if it is just to “relieve the pain”.

The “right to die” (from the patient) involves the “the duty to kill” of the doctor. (too much power)

So, the doctors and families can afterwards not feel good about it. There can have remorse and feel guilty.

Sometimes, euthanasia can go wrong (suicide, murder….). For example, there are cases in countries where euthanasia is legal, that doesn’t end well: People are euthanized even if they don’t want to or even if there are other solutions: For instance, in Belgium a woman was euthanized bc she was anorexic, or twins were euthanized bc they were becoming blind. More recently an 85-year-old Dutch woman was euthanized by the request of her husband even if she didn’t say clearly that she agreed and even if there was no terminal physical illness. A lot of people have died bc of euthanasia even though there still were treatment options and maybe a chance for years and even a decade of life.

Furthermore, euthanasia can increase suicide (because it can be easy and quick).

And there are weird cases, where people get euthanized because their families want to inherit.

Then, Euthanasia is often the solution that doesn’t cost that much money so people could be influenced by that. For example, a government can see the opportunity to reduce health expenditures. And there are cases where families choose euthanasia because they can’t afford the treatment and are under pressure from the hospitals because these need more places.

And is possible that euthanasia will slow and discourage the search for new cures and treatment.

Moreover, it can be possible that sometimes, patients are under pressure and choose euthanasia bc they are not aware of other possibilities, they could be not well informed and feel depressed and think that euthanasia is the only solution left for them.

Euthanasia can create an internal conflict for the patients bc they feel conflicted between their will to live and their will to die to make the pain go away. In a society where euthanasia is allowed the patients could feel like a burden.

Often, the choice of using euthanasia is just a call for help. Maybe the patient does not really want to die, he is scared, and he just wants to suffer less.

(Euthanasia can put a lot of pressure on the patient specially the old ones)

Besides, nowadays with the advances in medicine, there are other ways to avoid using euthanasia that don’t involve death but can help feeling better.

For example, Palliative care can control physical and psychological pain and it’s legal. And it doesn’t speed up nor delays death. Even if is not possible for everyone to have access to it.
