Chicago apparaît donc aujourd’hui à la fois impressionnante et chaleureuse. Une atmosphère étonnante pour une ville de cette ampleur. Difficile de quitter Windy City... Pourtant il le faut : la Route 66 nous attend, étirant son mince ruban d’asphalte sur près de 2 300 miles (3 700 km) !

Maudit qui fait chaud ! nous avons rouler, surtout en fin de journee avec un thermometre frisant les 100 degres F, heureusement qu'Andre a flairer une petit saloon ou nous avons pu nous humidifier le gosier avant de faire les derniers 17 miles nous separant de Kingman, Arisona . Comme de raison, il doit en sortir autant qu'il en entre donc voir une des photos pour constater... La biere etait excellente car apres avoir traverser des reserves indienne ou aucune boisson ne peut etre vendue ou consommee... Nous sommes encore renverses par l'immensite du Grand-Canyon, wow... Nous avons pris un tour d'helicoptere de 30 minutes, suffisamment pour apprecier cette merveille du monde. Je suis sur qu'apres avoir vu quelques photos jointes a cet envoi, vous nous comprendre, malheureusement ca ne rendra pas la moitie de ce que c'est. Demain, petite journee, environ 100 miles plus un petit detour en route pour Las Vegas soit pour aller voir le Hoover dam, le reservoir qui allimente en eau potable la ville de Las Vegas. a visit of the amazing Grand Canyon. Very impressive! Pictures may be worth tons of words but they certainly don't give justice to the Canyon which is... Grand! We have been quite lucky with the weather so far as we skipped very strong storms early in the trip. But there is avoiding the Arizona sun and they are expecting record breaking heat this week.



We got breakfast at a diner then went off in search of a games shop we'd seen advertised in the cinema last night. We found it eventually - it had moved, and it had an apallingly low level of stock. Then we went to Wal-Mart because Debbie wanted some T-Shirts, because they're cheap and it'll save us a trip to the laundrette. When we realised that jeans were $13 a pair (for Wranglers: no name jeans were cheaper still), our shopping list grew a little. After that, we set off towards Los Angeles.

These were our last couple of hours on country back roads, so we made the most of them. We drove down a dead-end piece of old road surface, because it'll probably be the last bit of old road we'll see.

In San Bernardino we saw another Wigwam Motel, with a slightly different slant on marketing.

We passed through San Dimas, but failed to find a Circle-K, let alone one at which strange things were afoot...

Today's fast-food investigation was Los Pollo Loco - excellent Mexican chicken dishes.

We stayed on Route 66 all the way to Sunset Boulevard, where we found a motel we could afford (Economy Inn again). We can't go anywhere or do anything because it's Survivor Climax Night on CBS. Survivor has taken America by storm -- it's Big Brother on a desert island (American Big Brother, by contrast, was not a hit). I'm sure there will be a British version of Survivor before we know it.

Survivor took up 4 hours of TV, then the Letterman show was mostly taken up by Survivor talk too, as was all the TV news.

Tomorrow, we're going to Universal Studios.

En quittant Miami, deux options s’offrent au voyageur : soit suivre le tracé récent de la Route 66, qui emprunte l’actuelle route 69, soit continuer tout droit sur Main Street afin de rejoindre la route 130 est.
