HSP3U TV Family Analysis
Socialization is a process where someone learns the attitudes, values, and behaviours that are valuable and necessary for the society in which he/she/they live. Socialization and social development begin in the family. For this assignment, you will become more familiarized with the family’s role in the socialization process.
Your Tasks[pic 1]
- Select one TV show that focuses on a family.
- Watch at least 1 episode of the show that you selected.
- Take note of the basic skills, values, socially acceptable goals, roles, and behaviours that the family is teaching its members.
- Write a 2-3 page analysis of the show.
Your goal is to answer the following questions using paragraphs to organize your thoughts (Italics means these are guiding questions. You do not have to answer them, they are just here to guide you if you need inspiration):
- Summarize your show of choice and explain what family structures you see (if applicable to your show)
- Do you see primarily one family structure or multiple?
- Is one family structure represented more than others?
- Choosing one family or group of people, explain the values, norms, behaviours, and various roles you see within the group. Provide examples and evidence where possible (shows do not need specific episode or quote references, simple descriptions of events work well)
- Are certain norms or values localized to given family structures?
- Do you notice any patterns with norms /values/ behaviours?
- Why might certain values or norms be portrayed more prominently than others?
- Pick one Major Theory of Sociology (Structural Functionalism, Symbolic Interactionism, Conflict Theory, Feminism)
- Describe the show through the lens of your chosen social theory
- How can you relate what is happening in your show to one of the theories
- Why did you pick the theory that you did?
- Was there a theory you wanted to pick but could not? And why?
- Do you think there was another theory that you could have applied?
- Do the institutions you notice in the show that you chose serve their intended purpose? Do you think that TV changes the way we see institutions?
