Contraception should be free for everyone in Canada

In Canada, there are over 9 million people of childbearing age, nearly a quarter of the Canadian population. To prevent pregnancy a lot of contraception, also known as birth control, is used. For some people the access to contraception can be difficult due to the cost. Contraception should be free for everyone in Canada. The free access to contraception will reduce unplanned pregnancies and promote gender equality and social justice.

In first, by reducing financial barriers, universal access to contraceptive methods would be promoted, which would significantly reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies. According to the petition text for free contraception on the assnat, unplanned pregnancy represent 40% of pregnancies in Canada either 200 000 each years. A better prevention will reduce these number. Also, free contraception can make state save money.  The unplanned pregnancy brings high costs to public service, free prevention will reduce the number of unplanned pregnancy and reduce the cost to the government. ``Every dollar invested in contraception can save $90 in public spending related to the management of unplanned pregnancies;`` (2024, assnat). In other word the government will make economie and at the same time make the population economiser. An effective prevention will reduced unplanned pregnancies and saving money for the state.

In second, a free access to contraception will promote gender equality and social justice. In our society the women are victim of lot of ineguality, one of these are the contraception. In a sexuel relation the women can be pregnant. Because of that women bear the majority of cost related to contraception. Contraception is not always use only to prevent pregnancy but also for medical condition, some girl at young age use contraception methode to regulated menstruation. Also, some people just do not have the money to pay contraception.`` Cost has been identified by Canadian contraceptive care providers as the single most important barrier to access to these medications. Oral contraceptives cost approximately $25 per unit, or $300 per year. `` (health Canada, 2024). Low-income people, young people and those without private insurance coverage are often the most affected by the cost of contraception. Free contraception would ensure equitable access for all, regardless of their financial situation. To reduce financial inequality, a free contraception would help.
