Western movies

Origin :

In the cinema industry, no genre has been more important than the western. The western played not only a vital role as a popular narrative form but also in shaping the business of filmmaking itself.

Western’s history didn’t begin in Hollywood in New Jersey and New York in 1903 when Edwin S. Porter recorded a ten minutes film called “Great Train Robbery”. This film is considered as the first Western especially because its sequential plot, multiple locations and gunfight. Western are often inspired by American history and in particular by the History from the American West (usually called Wild West). That’s why these films are called “Western”.

The characteristics of the western:

Westerns always have common points. In fact, the stories of these films are very similar because they’re all inspired by the same period of the American history. In fact, as we said before Westerns are based on the history of the Wild West and especially on the American Civil War or on the rivalries between cow-boys and redskins or on the rivalries between cow-boys and cow-boys.

In a good western, we always find train robberies, cow-boys, horses, guns, bank robberies, desert, sheriffs, saloon’s fight and so on.

Sergio Leone:

Sergio Leone was born in 1929 in Roma and died 1989 also in Roma. Sergio Leone was an Italian film director, producer and screenwriter, credited as the inventor of the "Spaghetti Western" genre.

Among the films he directed we can count a lot of western like A Fistful of dollars (released in 1964), For a few dollars more (1965), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) or Once upon a time in West (1968). These films were extremely successful financially, attracting large audiences throughout the world. At first, they were poorly received by critics, but Leone was eventually recognized for his meticulous care for historical accuracy and his powerful sense of visual composition. The last film he directed was Once upon a Time in America (1984) with Robert De Niro and James Wood a somber drama about Jewish gangsters in New York City who encounter greed, betrayal, and regret. Leone’s films are also very famous because of their musics. In Leone’s films, music plays a very important role. Indeed, Sergio Leone has collaborated throughout his career with the famous Italian composer Ennio Morricone. The musics of his films are world famous and I’m sure you’ve all heard at least one them.
