I am going to speak about the movie Invictus
After a few facts, I am going to talk about the main characters, then I will try and sum up the plot. In the end, I’d like to give my opinion about the movie and explain why I chose this subject.
Facts:
- Nelson Mandela himself has said that only Morgan Freeman could portray him. Freeman was the first actor cast.
- The scene where the plane flew over the stadium actually happened in real life. One of the sponsors for the Rugby World Cup, South African Airways, had their jet fly over the stadium twice, which had the message “good luck bokke” painted on it, energizing the crowds.
- To prepare for his role as Francois Pienaar, Matt Damon took intensive coaching at the Gardens Rugby Club under Chester Williams, who himself was a player in the South African rugby team of 1995.
The main characters are:
- Nelson Mandela played by Morgan Freeman; president of South Africa.
- Francois Pienaar played by Matt Damon; captain of the South African rugby team; the springboks.
- Chester Williams played McNiel Hendriks: The only black player on the team
In 1994, the election of Nelson Mandela marked the end of the Apartheid, but South Africa remained a nation deeply divided into racial and economic terms. To unify the country and give every citizen a sense of pride, Mandela put on the sport and made common cause with the captain of the modest South African rugby team.
In 1995, South Africa hosts the Rugby World Cup. Against the opinion of his supporters, Mandela feels in the sporting event the possibility of creating a sense of national unity behind the Springbok team, a symbol for several decades of South African white domination and the apartheid.
In my opinion, the movie is very good and represents very well the situation of how Mandela wanted to rule the country. Clint Eastwood proves that he can make a very good dramatic movie from a sport event. I decided to choose this subject because it is one of the best movie about Nelson Mandela.
