Becoming a young farmer : Lingohack

This video was posted the 25 September of 2019 on the channel BBC Learning English. It talks about becoming a young farmer in the United Kingdom nowadays.

The video shows the examples of three young english people, who chose to become farmers.

There are David and Bekka, who are now beef farmers in Cumbria, in North West England. It was very tough for them. Neither of them come from a farming background and they had a lack of money, at the beggining of their project. The couple says that banks laughed at them because they were competing with powerful farmers in order to finance their project. They had to find solutions. They lived in yurt for years and crowfunded their cattle. Today, they are running their own farm.

There is also Jessica, who is 22. Before becoming a farmer, she was a barmaid. She is very satisfied about this life-changing decision, she says that it is the best thing she has ever done.

Farming can be a tough business for many reasons. There are weather, working long hours but it is also a challenging and competive market. The National Federation of Young Farmers' Club in the United Kingdom says that the industry's future depends on innovation but also on more opportunities.

Nevertheless, farmers still promote that the United Kingdom's farmland is a perfect place to work. Life in the open air, working with animals and growing food for a living remains a dream for many young english people.
