2°11

Cyber harassment is a type of harassment that has happened with the arrival of social networks. Indeed, the goal is to harass a person by sending him many messages, by menacing him, while remaining anonymous behind a screen. The first person to talk about cyberbullying was Bill Belsey, who in 2003 said: "Cyberbullying is the use of information and communication technologies to deliberately, repeatedly and aggressively engage in behaviour towards individuals or a group with the intent of causing harm to others". In 2006, one in 10 young people were mocked and insulted on social networks. According to a survey published in French in October 2011, 9% of students are victims of cyberbullying by SMS and on social networks. Indeed, the easier a young person thinks it is to harass someone, the more fun they will have sending mean messages, posting unnecessary and mean messages on social networks or posting embarrassing videos about other people. Victims of cyber harassment do not always know the names of their "attackers" because they may hide their names under a pseudonym or a false identity. Not knowing one's abuser increases the victim's sense of insecurity. By sending a message, the harasser cannot see the pain he is doing to the person he is harassing, so he cannot have compassion towards the victim to whom he is sending insulting messages. The causes due to cyber harassment are important either for the victim or for the harasser or even for a witness of this harassment whether on short, medium or long term.

For the victim, in the short term, the person will feel abandoned and will lock himself in his home, which leads to multiple absences from school. She will be ashamed of herself, she will lose her confidence and self-esteem. She will also have health problems because she will not eat as before or even at all. In the medium term, the victim will become depressed and will feel guilty about what they have suffered. She's gonna start having suicidal tendencies. Where this person preferred to speak in defense of this, now, his only defense is violence because he has developed aggressive behavior. And in the long term, the victim will have trouble creating a social life, she will take drugs, will have major health problems that will cost her dearly...

For the harasser, in the short term, the person will no longer have empathy towards someone else. He will often become violent to mask a lack of self-confidence. He will start harassing other people again so that he can maintain or regain a sense of power, of superiority over other people. In the medium term, the person will be attracted to delinquency. He will also miss school thinking that adults unfairly reject him. And in the long run, it can become more serious. Indeed, by becoming more violent and having chosen the path of delinquency, he risks being locked up in prison or having a strong almond for multiple insults or other types of harassment.
