Places and forms of power

The power can express it with different ways, through the movement of the media : reality TV, internet, written press, the Civil Right Movement and the politic recognition or financial power. The power may be religious.

The politic power of the british was very strong in Ireland during the 50’s when they declared their independance.

To illustrate this notion, we studied particularly 2 extracts in class a film « In the name of the Father », and espacially the power of justice.

In what the power of the justice expresses itself ?

« In the name of the Father » is a story of a man who was unjustly accused. The novel is the story of Gerry Conlon, who was native of Belfast, in Northern Ireland (part of UK). The main character was framed by the Police. This film is based on a true story and shows particularly the power of justice on the society.

The police used violence to forced to confess their guilt (culpabilité). The Police interrogation was a « parody » of justice, it was not by law.

Furthermore, during the trial, the court supported the prosecution : the Conlon, Richardson and the others are the scapegoat.

Althought, the guilty of the bomb attack is Joe, an IRA member, the police kept the Conlons in jail and they hidden evidence of thei innocence.

Then, the police found false evidence to accuse them. They were sentenced by a miscarriage of justice.

To conclude, the tensions in Ireland shows the power of justice or rather « injustice ».

The police and the justice have the bigger power. The police power expressed itself with violence and have the « last word ».
