The notion i am going to deal with is spacies and exchanges. To begin i’d like to give a définition of the notion :an exchange is an act of giving and receiving something else in return. It can also be seen as a continuous movment or circulation. There are different kind of exchanges : média people, trade… To illustrate the notion I have chosen to talk about immigration in the USA.
How is immigration a positive form of exchange for the USA but as the same time criticized and badly viewed ?
Immigration is in first an exchange of culture.
In fact, the United States has acquired, through immigration, an overwhelming multiculturalism from other countries. Indeed thanks to its past as English, French and Spanish colonies and because of immigration the usa are a mixture of different cultures. Immigrants bring their culture to a new country just as settlers the country will become multicultural which will attract other waves of immigration and further develop the country’s culture. This multiculturalism also attracts tourists which is positive for the country’s economy. Then immigration is a form of economic exchange. Immigrants coming to the United States dream of living the American dream. They want to have a job, to be able to earn a living, and maybe even climb the ladder. These immigrants do the jobs that people living in the USA do not want to do. Moreover, migrants are young, so we can expect them to be in a better health. Their motivation, their youth and their desire to succeed is part of the USA’s dynamic. We saw in class a speech by Barack Obama that showed us this positive vision of immigration. Barack Obama évoque hat states were based on immigration. He even évoque hat the latter is the one that makes the United States a dynamic and powerful country. But we know that this vision of immigration is not shared by all Americans. Donald Trump wants to build a wall between the American and Mexican borders. In an oral understanding we saw that this wall should be 5m high and would be covered with barbed wires.
It would be guarded by the FBI and patrols. So the United States no longer sees the benefits of immigration today; it sees immigration as a scourge. We also see a united state’s désire , they wants immigrants to adapt and adopt american culture and abandon their own. Yet we know from the history of the US colonies and Obama’s discourse that the US was based on immigration. We studied a colour cartoon in which we saw the settlers arriving on a boat and the Indians on the shore building a wall. This humorous document shows the opposition between the United States in the past and the present. The Indians did not build a wall to prevent the settlers from coming and they did not impose their culture on them and never asked them to learn their language! The Indians helped the settlers simply and in our days the immigrants want the same
