A cause des problemes de drogues, il disparait peu à peu des pop charts. Au cours des années 1980, Ray Charles fait quelques apparitions sporadiques, à l'occasion d'évènements tels que le film The Blues Brothers ou la chanson We Are The World au bénéfice de USA For Africa. Malgré cela, il n'obtient que des petits succès. Seule exception, son duo avec Chaka Khan en 1989, I'll Be Good to You, le réconcilie brièvement avec les pop charts.
Au long de sa carrière, il recu douze Grammy Awards. Il a été fait Chevaliers des Arts et Lettres en 1986. La chanson Georgia On My Mind a été consacrée hymne officiel de l'État de Géorgie en 1979.
Il meurt à l'âge de 73 ans d'une maladie du foie dans sa maison de Beverly Hills. Il est enterré au cimetière d'Inglewood, en Californie. Marié deux fois, il a eu douze enfants.

Hit the Road Jack est une chanson écrite par Percy Mayfield et enregistrée pour la première fois en 1960 Elle fut popularisée par Ray Charles en octobre 1961. C'est une des chansons les plus connues de Ray Charles.
Toute la chanson se déroule sur un ostinato (courte formule répétée) de 4 notes descendantes (la sol fa mi) joué avec différents instruments. Le thème principal du refrain est chanté par un choeur de femmes, entrecoupé par des interventions du chanteur (quelquefois avec des cris, quelquefois en parlant...).
