Gender stereotypes
On this blog I will explain what the gender stereotype is and my point of view by illustrating with pictures.
Gender refers to the personal and social identity of an individual as a man, woman or non-binary person. Gender includes different concepts such as attitudes, feelings, behaviours, aesthetic choices or accessories that may have been associated with a particular gender. While sex refers to biological characteristics, being born female or male.
A stereotype is a generalised opinion or prejudice about the characteristics that women and men possess and the roles they play.
Stereotypes begin at birth.
Since they are small, boys learn to defend themselves and to be protective. They usually play with cars, robots, trains etc. as opposed to little girls who play with Barbie dolls or imitate hairdressers, stylists, etc. Girls are associated with the colour pink whereas boys are associated with the colour blue.
Women should do the housework, cook and look after the children. Men should not do the housework and not be responsible for looking after the children. Men must be masculine and cannot wear dresses, skirts. The same goes for women, they must be feminine and not be muscular like men. Some occupations are associated with a genre, for example football, dance, secretary, doctor….There are still many gender stereotypes but these were the most general ones.
I think parents are the biggest contributor to the stereotype. Women can be and do like men and the same goes for men.For me a man can be feminine and a woman can be masculine. Clothes and play don't have a gender.
