Managing population change:Essay

In the essay below, I will talk about the problems that India and Belgium will have or already have and solutions to solve those problems.

First of all, in India, we can clearly see that there are too many people in the centre of the country. This is due to the fertility rate which is, at some place, 1.4 higher than thee normal replacement rate! On the contrary, in the south, there is a lack of people because the fertility rate is only 1.7. There is already a solution which say that girls can have a child only at 23. This allows girls to have a better education and so to have less children. An other solution would be to do an internal migration: some people in the centre of the country should go to the south to have a better distributed population.

Secondly, in Belgium, there are much more people in Flanders than in Wallonia. The reasons for this is that there are more big cities in Flanders and also Wallonia is quite a hilly region. We could, like in China, promulgate a law to have less children by family or we can, as said before, take Flemish families in Wallonia but in this case, there would be some problems: first, the language barrier will be something difficult to go through and the fact that Walloon and Flemish don’t like each other won’t help.

Furthermore, Wallonia doesn’t need so much to have a greater population, we just need to reduce the Flemish one.

We can see that even if it is a LEDC or a MEDC, the internal migration will still be a solution for both.

To conclude, we could do internal migration or also a kind of “one child policy”.
