Chapter 1: Description of the Pont-Neuf crossing where no one lingers. Description of Thérèse Raquin's haberdashery shop and the three people who live there: Mrs. Raquin, Thérèse and Camille.
Chapter 2: Mrs. Raquin left Vernon. His son, Camille, is a very sick man who is trying to get away from his mother. He was raised with his cousin Therese, who is sweet and calm. They are married but act as before. Nothing has changed. Therese buried her wild side deep inside her.
Chapter 3: Moving to Paris. Mrs. Raquin and Camille did not consult Thérèse. Life is of no interest to her. Camille works in the administration, which fulfils his dream, and reads books he doesn't understand.
Chapter 4: On Thursday evenings, the Raquin receive dominoes and tea for a game. There are Captain Michaud, Olivier and Suzanne Michaud as well as Grivet. Thérèse doesn't like these parties, which Camille doesn't understand. She is dreamy and seems out of the world.
Chapter 5: Camille meets Laurent, a childhood friend. He takes him back to the shop and invites him to dinner. This one is a lazy man who only works to continue to live well! He troubles Teresa who had never seen a real man before.
Chapter 6: Laurent paints a portrait of Camille. Therese seems attracted to him but is always calm and motionless. After many thoughts, Laurent decides to become Therese's lover, he is convinced that she will fall into his arms at the first opportunity: what happens, she resists only very little.
Chapter 7: Laurent is afraid of Thérèse's passion but she is beautiful as well and he takes a lot of pleasure so he comes back. They see each other in Camille's room. She takes no precautions because the Raquin can't see anything, she always remains cautious despite everything.
Chapter 8: Laurent has managed to integrate into the family. Thérèse keeps a mask when Laurent visits the family, she has no difficulty in this situation. They live like this for eight months.
Chapter 9: Laurent can no longer be absent from work to join Thérèse. She managed to reach him at home once, but they could no longer see each other. Laurent realizes that it is essential to him. They talk about killing Camille to live happily together.
Chapter 10: At a Thursday meeting, Captain Michaud admits that some criminals are getting away with it. Without giving the impression of it, Thérèse and Laurent listen carefully.
Chapter 11: Walk in St-Ouen. Laurent is thinking about how to kill Camille. He dropped it from the boat and then capsized it to make it look like an accident. Therese is having a nervous breakdown. He goes back alone to Paris to tell Mrs. Raquin the news, he is afraid that Therese's nerves will ruin everything
