CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, it discusses or explains the key definitions of Discipline and Leadership.

At its core, leadership is a long term, transformation approach to life and work in essence, away of being that has the potential for creating positive change throughout our society. (Larry spears, 2004).

Leadership inspires, challenge and remain a goal for all who are in positions of responsibility. Leadership puts the needs to others first, and listens to their views. Some groups within the church, such as the elderly, those with disabilities, women or children, may have few opportunities to share their needs and views. Their views, opinion and contributions need to be valued. In this way, decision making can be shared, owned and followed by everyone.

As society places higher and higher expectations on the performance of public and private agencies, leadership is bound to come. The question is what kind of leadership is needed for sustainability discipline? In a nuts shell, we need a critical mass of leaders at all levels of the system that are explicitly cognizant of and committed to pursuing in practice the implementation of the discipline in leadership. Systems change on an ongoing basis only if you have enough leaders who are disciplines. If a leader is discipline, he or she change context.

When a leader is discipline and action go hand in hand, the concepts get larger and they also get more meaningful because of they are grounded in concrete strategies and actions. (Newman B. 1997).

                                                1

Almost 20 years ago, Peter Block (1987) argued that “culture” get changed in a thousand small ways, not by dramatic announcement emanating from and the boardroom. Not fully true, it requires society on the thousand small ways and boardroom policies. Discipline is a team sport, and the team is large.

In this topic (discipline in leadership) I take up where we are now and set the definition of key term i.e. Discipline and leadership, aims and objectives, qualities of leadership, elements of leadership, and responsibilities of leadership and finally, the impact of discipline in leadership, as it plays out in our society.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

 DISCIPLINE

Discipline is a training to act in accordance with rules. It is activity, exercise, or a regimen that develops or improves a skill; training. It is punishment inflicted by way of correction and training. (Newman B. 1997). I agree with his definition because discipline allows you to know the rule and regulation that govern a place.

Discipline is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “a branch of learning or scholarly instruction.” Discipline can also be refers to the rigor or training effect of experience, adversity, etc it is the behavior in accord with rules of conduct. I agree because it shows you a branch of instruction or learning. It is also a set or system of rules and regulations.

Discipline is a positive parenting approach to teach a child self-control and confidence. As opposed to punishment, discipline techniques focus on what it is we want the child to learn, and what the child is capable of learning. Discipline is a process, not a single act. (Senge, P. 1990) I

agree with his definition because discipline is the basis for teaching children how to be in harmony with themselves and get along with other people. The ultimate goal of discipline is for children to understand their own behavior, take initiative and be responsible for their choices, aand respect themselves and others. In other words, they will internalize this positive process of thinking and behaving. (see Georgia Kight, Currituck County Family & Consumer Educator).

Punishment, on the other hand, focuses on the misbehavior and may do little or nothing to help a child behave better in the future. The adult who punishes the child teaches the child that the adult, rather than the child, is responsible for the way the child behaves. Punishment has negative effects on children, such as inducing shame, guilt, anxiety, and increased aggression, lack of independence and/or lack of caring for others, and greater problems with parents or caregivers and other children. (see Jackie Roseboro, Columbus County Director and FCE Agent).

Discipline involves training expected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior, especially training that produces moral or mental improvement. It can also be controlled behavior resulting from disciplinary training; self – control. Control obtained by enforcing compliance or order. It is a systematic method to obtain obedience. That is a state of order based on submission to rules and authority.

Furthermore, Discipline is the basic set of tools we require to solve life’s problems. Without discipline, we can solve nothing. With only some discipline we can solve some problems. With total discipline we can solve all problems.

Having says that, discipline is needed for the pianist to practice for the concert. Discipline is vital for the student to pass their exam. Discipline is mandatory for leaders to achieve their goals and dreams.

                                                3

One of the greatest failures of our generation has been to underestimate the importance of discipline influenced by a superficial psychology; we have abhorred restraint, indulged our natural impulses and crucified inhabitations. We forget too easily that no worthwhile or significant life or work is possible without discipline.

LEADERSHIP

This is the process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task, although there are also other in-depth definitions of leadership.

Leadership is “organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal”. The leader may or may not have any formal authority. (Oxford Dictionary)

Leadership has produced theories involving traits, situational interaction, function, behaviors, power, vision and values, charisma, and intelligence, among others. Somebody whom people follow: somebody who guides or directs other.

Jesus defined leadership as service, and that applies whether a leader works in a secular organization. True leader is concerned primarily with the welfare of others, not with his own comfort or prestige. He shows sympathy for the problems of others but his sympathy fortifies and stimulates; it does not soften and make weak.

In other hand, Leadership is the position or function of a leader. It is the ability to lead. It is the act or instance of leading, guidance, direction. It is the leaders of a group.
